Launch of New Children’s Picture Book, Clowning Around

Mark your calendars for my launch events on November 7 and November 8 of my new children’s picture book, Clowning Around. I’ll be at the Gallery at the Network on November 7 from 6 to 9 in conjunction with Art After Dark to sign my books and demonstrate an accordion book form. The Gallery is a craft and art gallery at 773 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo, CA.

I’ll also be at Whiz Kids Toy Store on November 8 from 11 AM to 1 PM signing books. There will be a raffle and craft project for kids. This event is in conjunction with national Neighborhood Toy Store Day.

Clowning Around is about Charlie, a clownfish, who likes to do tricks for the children who visit his aquarium. When the other fish become jealous, they devise a plan to keep him from getting all the attention. Their plan eventually backfires. This story is for children ages 3 to 8 and is about jealousy, cooperation and working together.

Beryl Reichenberg’s new kid’s book Clowning Around was featured on Venture Galleries website for authors and readers. The newly released Oak Tree Press book for young children up to the age of eight is about jealousy and the need to work as a team.

When Charlie the Clownfish gets all the attention at the aquarium doing tricks for the children, the other fish in the tank become jealous. They devise a plan to keep Charlie from being the star, but the plan backfired. Ultimately all the fish learn to work together to put on a fabulous show for the kids.

Because I write children’s stories, I find that writing a newsletter for my contacts may be different from one for adults. They must be easily scanned for pertinent information by busy parents, colorful and full of images and with information that children might enjoy. Thus I include coming events, a description of my new books, short articles of kid pertinent information and lots of images. To view the full newsletter go to my website:
What kind of newsletters do you send to contacts?

Screen shot 2014-09-22 at 7.49.04 PMWhen I first started writing twelve years ago I was naïve and uninformed about the publishing industry. I thought I knew about picture books. After all, I was a teacher. I used picture books to enhance my curriculum on a daily basis. I knew which ones worked, and which ones didn’t, for my students. What more was there TO know? Turns out–a lot!  Luckily, within weeks of my putting pen to paper, a good friend steered me in the right direction–toward  SCBWI, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. And that was a step toward success.

Screen shot 2014-09-22 at 7.42.44 PMIf you read lots of kidlit blogs you’ll find this advice to newbies: “Join SCBWI.” That’s because it’s the best and most important advice for people who want to write for children.
